ARTIST STATEMENT:
My name is Allayne Seamans. I am a working mom of two young boys, Eli and Carson. I work in the community for the YMCA and the Sherwood Center for the Arts. In my post college years I worked in medicine until the birth of my first son. I decided to stay at home and find opportunities that would allow me to work and be with my kids. I have been a ceramic artist for over 20 years now. I am typically drawn to functional pottery as opposed to non-functional art. I like to think of the art as an extension of our everyday lives. Most of my pieces reflect the northwest culture and outdoors.

CREATIVE PROCESS:
All of my ceramic art is made by me. I am a wheel thrower with very limited hand-built art. I throw and trim all my pieces on the wheel. Once bisqued, fired for the first time, I will decorate with oxide transfer decorations or hand-paint designs. Items that do not get painted at this stage will get glazed and decals added after for a third firing.

FUN FACTS & INSPIRATION:
The purple haze glaze was created for the willamette valley lavender festival the summer of 2019. It has received so much praise I continue to make the glaze for other pieces outside the show. I typically dip my pieces in glaze, but had to use an industrial spray gun to get an even application for the bowl. I decided to break up the purple with the wood handles on the sides. They are attached with industrial adhesive and adorned with twine. The red plate was my largest to date in the summer of 2019. I added a reactive glaze to the surface for the “oil spots” on the surface. I also added wood to this piece to give it a more natural look.
