ARTIST STATEMENT & INSPIRATION:
Kim got hooked on Japanese culture when the TV miniseries “Shogun” aired. When Kim attended Lewis & Clark college, she took various courses in Japanese history and language with the hope of studying there her senior year. Unfortunately, that journey had to be put on hold. After years of waiting, Kim was finally able to realize her dream of visiting this fascinating place called Japan, and even better, with her husband and daughter.

Because her husband had lived in japan for a while in the late 1980s, they had a unique opportunity to stay in a traditional Japanese home, eating homemade food, seeing ancient historic places, experiencing the 400 year old Hikiyama Matsuri festival (kabuki) as well as meeting many kind, generous and beautiful people.

“Japan is a country steeped in tradition spanning thousands of years, encompassing everything from art, music, theater, martial arts, food, language… its beauty, tradition and simplicity made a lasting impression on me personally, and my art style is a reflection of these experiences and impressions.” Kim lives in Sherwood with her husband Joe and their daughter Sage.
