The Sherwood Cultural Arts Commission presents an interactive public art project that examines how labels both help and hinder our ability to build unity as a community and as a human race.
UNITY is circular arrangement of 32 poles that will be in the large field next to Cannery Square. Each pole will be labeled with an identifier. For example, “I’m a parent,” “I speak English as a Second Language,” “I identify as LGBTQ.” With yarn, participants will tie to each pole with which they identify. A canopy of interconnectedness forms as more people participate. In the end, we see that we are all connected. This project celebrates the uniqueness of individuals and raises awareness of how labels impact our perception of and interactions with the world.
The Cultural Arts Commission believes that UNITY can change the tone of our conversations. They have hopes that a renewed spirit of optimism, camaraderie and respectfulness emerges that prompts unitive leadership as we move forward.
The Cultural Arts Commission invites you to participate in building this representation of our community. The Sherwood CommUNITY Art Project Free and Open to the General Public.
