2017 Missoula Children’s Theatre

The Center for the Arts and the Sherwood Foundation for the Arts are excited to welcome back the renowned Missoula Children’s Theatre this summer, as they present “Gulliver’s Travels” and “Treasure Island” on the main stage! A little red truck pulls into town, with everything it takes to mount a full-scale musical production…except the cast! Don't miss this great opportunity to get your kids involved. On Monday, they're cast as characters. By Saturday, they've gained character - the kind that really counts. Hurry and register, as spots are limited based on age groups!

NOTE TO PARENTS: Although this is a week-long program, it is not a camp. Rehearsal schedules can vary for each student, depending on their role. Performers will be assigned specific rehearsal sessions each day, sometime between 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., as they prepare for the final performance (on Saturday). There will also be a few optional workshops for the students to attend as well. This program is not designed or set up for kids to be dropped off when they are not scheduled for a rehearsal. Schedules will be distributed to all cast members after auditions on the first day of the week.

SHOW SYNOPSIS: TREASURE ISLAND

Written and Conceived by Jim Caron
Music and Lyrics by Jim Caron and Michael McGill

The Missoula Children's Theatre takes pride in presenting TREASURE ISLAND, an original adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s epic novel. Young Jim Hawkins, a mischievous lad, lives with his Mother and six Sisters in a seaside village on the coast of Maine. The year is 1782 and the American War for Revolution is in its last days. Longing for adventure, Jim comes under the hypnotic spell of the legendary pirate, Long John Silver. While waiting tables in the family Inn, Jim finds a treasure map and, with the villainous Silver as his seeming mentor, sails uncharted seas with only the ragged map and a flock of Gulls as guides. Always up for adventure, Jim’s Ruffian friends say farewell to their Village parents and serve as cabin boys for Silver and his band of hilarious (although unsavory) Pirate types. Once on the island, nights are sleepless as true colors are revealed in our hero’s quest for the proverbial happy ending. Then - at last - the treasure is found and hand in hand we’re homeward bound.

TREASURE ISLAND - it’ll shiver your timbers!

The Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT), the nation’s largest touring children’s theatre, has been touring extensively for more than 40 years now from Montana to Japan, and will visit nearly 1,200 communities this year with up to 44 teams of Tour Actor/Directors. A tour team arrives in a given town with a set, lights, costumes, props and make-up, everything it takes to put on a play...except the cast. The team holds an open audition and casts 50-60 local students to perform in the production. The show is rehearsed throughout the week and two public performances are presented on Saturday. All MCT shows are original adaptations of classic children’s stories and fairytales . . . a twist on the classic stories that you know and love. Also included in the residency are three enrichment workshops presented by the Tour Actor/Directors. Creativity, social skills, goal achievement, communication skills and self-esteem are all characteristics that are attained through the participation in this unique, educational project. MCT's mission is the development of lifeskills in children through participation in the performing arts.

The Missoula Children's Theatre is based in Missoula, Montana, and also runs many local programs. These include musical theatre day camps and performing arts classes for local children, a summer residency Performing Arts Camp for students from around the world and the Missoula Community Theatre which creates an arena for local talent of all ages to participate in large-scale productions and attracts audiences from western Montana.
