The theme of OSB's fall concert is "The Three Bs and Then Some." The
"Three Bs" are generally considered to be Bach, Beethoven and Brahms; but
all the works on our concert have been composed or arranged by someone
whose name begins with B.
We will begin with Berlioz' "Roman Carnival Overture," a virtuoso piece
with one of the most beautiful English horn solos in the repertoire,
followed by Beethoven's "March in F." We're betting you didn't know
Beethoven ever wrote a march! "Blessed are They" from the Brahms Requiem
is next, then comes Bizet's famous "Farandole" from the L'Arlesienne
Suite. The first half will conclude with "Joy in all Things" by Brian
Balmages.
After a short intermission we will return to open the second half of the
program with "Overture to Candide" by Leonard Bernstein. Bach's beautiful
"Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" is next. Movie music will follow: "The Man
from Snowy River" from the movie of the same name, arranged by Barry
Bignell. The finale to the concert will be Robert Buckley's exciting
"Iditarod," a musical depiction of the famous dogsled race of the same
name.
