Public Art is proven to increase the livability, beauty, and vibrancy of downtown areas, increasing foot traffic and market values. With the approval of Sherwood’s Public Art Master Plan and the Sherwood Murals Plan by City Council, Sherwood Main Street, and with the help of a Community Enhancement Grant, the City moved forward with Sherwood’s first Public Art Mural. The mural was painted on the wall of Symposium Coffee.
This first public mural was a step towards expanding Sherwood’s focus on an Arts and Culture identity, representing a part of the values and spirit of the community as expressed in the City’s 2040 Vison.
The Main Street organization commissioned renowned mural artist Angelina Marino-Heidel to create and paint the mural. Marino-Heidel, a resident of Southwest Portland and listed in the Regional Arts & Culture Council’s Muralist Roster, created a colorful, eye-catching medley of Sherwood’s History and Transportation.
The mural is located on the west side of Symposium Coffee on the alley where the drive-through was located, making a visual impact on visitors as they enter Old Town. The owners, Kevin and Amanda Bates, whose commitment to Art Walks and other Old Town events made them ideal partners for the mural, generously offered their building when Main Street was searching for a location for the mural in early 2020.
Sherwood’s Murals Plan requires a propsal process where the proposer submits the design, artist, budget, and maintenance criteria for a recommendation by the Cultural Arts Commission and approval from City Council. The Sherwood Public Art Master Plan and Sherwood Murals Plan can be seen and accessed on the websites of both the City of Sherwood and the Sherwood Center for the Arts.
